Karate Competitions at S.E.M.K.A.

At S.E.M.K.A. Karate, we encourage students of all ages and abilities to explore the world of karate competitions—whether you’re looking to test your skills, build confidence, or simply enjoy the experience of friendly challenge.

What Are Karate Competitions?

Karate competitions are organized events where practitioners can demonstrate their abilities in two main areas:

  • Kata (Forms): A series of pre-arranged movements showcasing technique, timing, balance, and focus. Competitors perform individually and are judged on precision and style.
  • Kumite (Sparring): Controlled sparring between two competitors using the techniques learned in class. Matches are judged based on timing, control, and technique, with safety always being the top priority.

Competitions are divided by age, grade (belt level), and experience, ensuring fair and appropriate matchups for all participants.

Why Compete?

  • Build self-confidence and mental focus
  • Improve technique and performance under pressure
  • Gain experience in a positive, sportsmanlike environment
  • Enjoy the camaraderie of team events and cheering on fellow students

Getting Involved

Participation in competitions is completely optional but highly encouraged for students who are interested. S.E.M.K.A. regularly participates in British Wado Federation local, regional, and national tournaments, and our instructors provide guidance and training to help students prepare.

We’re proud of our club’s strong history in competitions and the achievements of our students at all levels.

If you’re interested in learning more or would like to enter a competition, speak with your instructor—they’ll help you decide when the time is right and guide you through the process.

Competition Training

S.E.M.K.A. is fully committed to ensuring that should students wish to compete they are given every opportunity to do this. Former English Karate Federation (E.K.F.) Kumite England Squad member, H.R.H. Princess Fallon Karadjordjevic of Serbia – formally known as Fallon Rayman – 2nd Dan, visits the club frequently to assist the students. Fallon competed regularly both Nationally and Internationally and has had much success.

From June 2010 until April 2011 Fallon took a break from competing and retired her position on the EKF Kumite ‘A’ squad in order to concentrate on her 2nd Dan. However, she regained her position on the Kumite ‘A’ Squad in January 2012 before taking a further break from 2013 – present. Her marriage to H.R.H. Prince Djprdje Karadjorgevic of Serbia has led to taking on other responsibilities within Karate.
