What is T’ai Chi Ch’uan?

T’ai Chi – “Supreme Ultimate”
The forces of nature in balance

Ch’uan – “Fist”, “Power”, “Balance”
Harnessing the forces of nature

T’ai Chi Ch’uan is an ancient Taoist Chinese exercise system that promotes holistic health—physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Its graceful, flowing movements are not only visually calming but also cultivate internal energy for both healing and self-defence.

Unlike “hard” martial arts that rely on speed and force, T’ai Chi is a “soft” internal art that emphasizes yielding and balance. It strengthens organs and muscles, enhances vitality, relaxes body and mind, and supports internal energy circulation.

Class Format & Philosophy

Our Tai Chi classes introduce the principles of T’ai Chi Ch’uan and are suitable for those seeking a gentle, meditative approach rather than a combative one.

Students will learn:

  • Tai Chi 8 & 13 & 24 Forms (Yang Style)
  • The 37 Step Yang Style Short Form by Professor Cheng Man Ch’ing
  • The underlying principles of Tai Chi
  • Applications of postures in a gentle self-defence context
  • Sticking, yielding, and basic pushing hands techniques
  • Warm-up and stretching routines
  • Chi Kung (Qigong) exercises for internal energy development

💡 Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a bottle of water.
